Get your free estimateClopay Roller Replacement: The Austin Owner’s Guide
Clopay roller replacement in Austin typically runs $110 – $220 installed, and we stock Clopay-compatible rollers on our trucks for same-day swaps in most cases. The roller is the small wheel that glides your door along the vertical and horizontal tracks, and when one fails you’ll usually hear it first: a grinding, scraping, or squealing sound on one side of the door. Left alone, a seized roller chews through the track and puts uneven stress on the rest of the door, which is when a $150 roller swap turns into a $400 track realignment.
Most Austin homeowners discover the problem when the door starts shuttering on the way up, or they spot the mangled nylon casing on the garage floor. By then the steel bearing inside has usually been exposed to months of Texas heat and dust, and the lubricant is long gone.
Which Clopay Models This Applies To
Clopay uses two main roller styles across its residential lineup. The entry-level Classic series, Gallery series, and Coachman series typically ship with 2-inch nylon rollers running on a standard 11-ball bearing. The premium Reserve series and Canyon Ridge series often use a heavier 2-inch nylon roller with a hardened 13-ball bearing, especially on doors wider than 12 feet or thicker than 2 inches. The difference matters: a standard roller on a heavy Reserve door wears out in half the time.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see regularly in Austin garages: Clopay’s older Value series and Intro series doors from the mid-2000s often shipped with a 1-13/16-inch roller, not the current 2-inch standard. If you eyeball a part online or grab a generic big-box roller, it’ll be too small for the track gap and the door will rattle like a loose window every time it cycles. We match the roller diameter to the track, not to the door brand name. The roller itself is stamped, but the stamp wears smooth after a decade, so measuring the old roller’s diameter with calipers is the reliable way to confirm. We carry both sizes on the truck.
One more thing worth knowing: Clopay’s OEM rollers are fine, but their nylon compound is designed for national average conditions. Austin’s heat and cedar pollen load is not national average. We stock a quality aftermarket nylon roller with a sealed bearing that holds up better in our climate, and it costs about the same as the OEM part. We’ll install either one, and we’ll show you the old roller and the new one before anything gets bolted in.

Signs Your Clopay Roller Replacement Is Failing
- Grinding or scraping noise on one side. That’s the steel bearing inside the roller spinning dry against the nylon. The nylon casing has cracked or worn through, and now it’s metal on metal against the track.
- The door shudders or jerks halfway up. A roller with a flat-spotted bearing binds at a specific point in the track every cycle. You’ll feel it as a thump at the same spot every time.
- Visible cracks or chunks missing from the nylon wheel. Austin’s heat cycles bake the nylon until it gets brittle, then a hard close chips a section off. Once the casing is compromised, the roller is done.
- The door sits slightly crooked in the opening. A collapsed roller on one side drops that corner of the door by a half-inch or more, and the remaining panels take stress they weren’t designed for.
- Worn or flaking metal on the track. Steel-on-steel contact throws off metal shavings. You’ll see rust-colored dust collecting in the bottom of the vertical track.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Clopay roller replacement in Austin runs $110 – $220 installed, and the range is driven almost entirely by how many rollers we replace and what style your door needs. Here’s the breakdown:
- Single roller replacement: $110 – $140. One bad roller, matched to your track size, installed and realigned.
- Full set of 10-12 rollers: $160 – $220. This is what we recommend when the door is 8+ years old. Replacing one roller on an old door is like patching one tire on a set with 60,000 miles; the rest are right behind it.
- Heavy-duty 13-ball rollers (Reserve/Canyon Ridge doors or doors over 12 feet wide): Add $2 – $4 per roller over standard.
The price you see is the price on the invoice. We write it down before any wrench turns, and it covers the roller or rollers, the labor, track cleaning, and a quick lubrication pass on the new parts. Every roller replacement carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if that roller fails within a year, we come back and replace it at no charge. The quote is locked before we start. Always.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect your rollers without any special tools. Open the door halfway, look at the rollers inside the tracks, and check for cracked nylon or wobble. That’s a good, safe diagnostic step. What we don’t recommend is pulling the roller yourself. The bottom roller bracket on a Clopay door is bolted to the panel, but the cable that runs through it is under serious tension from the torsion spring above. Unbolt that bracket without knowing how to secure the cable, and the spring’s tension can whip that cable and bracket loose. This isn’t a scare tactic, it’s just the physics of a couple hundred pounds of wound steel. That spring is the same reason we tell Austin homeowners to never attempt a spring replacement themselves.
If you spot a bad roller, call (361) 320-8872. Jaylen Ross and our crew will confirm the diagnosis, show you the exact roller we’re installing, and give you a written price before we touch the door.
FAQs
In Austin’s climate, standard Clopay nylon rollers last 7 to 10 years before the casing cracks and the bearing dries out. Doors that face direct afternoon sun or sit near cedar-heavy lots tend to wear out on the shorter end. Heavy-duty sealed-bearing rollers we install typically outlast the originals by a few years. Call (361) 320-8872 and we’ll tell you honestly which camp your door falls into.
A failing Clopay roller can’t be repaired. Once the nylon casing is cracked or the bearing is wiped out, the roller is a replacement part, not a repairable one. The good news is replacement is fast and affordable, and you’ll get a written quote before we start.
A single roller swap takes about 30 to 45 minutes. A full set of 10 to 12 rollers on a double-wide door takes about 90 minutes, including track cleaning and lubrication. We show up with the rollers on the truck, so there’s no second visit for parts.
Yes. Our trucks carry both the standard 2-inch and the older 1-13/16-inch rollers, plus heavy-duty 13-ball bearing rollers for Reserve and Canyon Ridge doors. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie openers, so we can chase down the most common issues in one trip. Call (361) 320-8872 and we’ll get you on the schedule.
