Chamberlain cable and drum replacement in Austin typically runs $130 – $250 installed, and we stock the parts on our trucks for most Chamberlain models. When a cable snaps or a drum strips out, the door usually freezes on one side, goes crooked in the tracks, or drops with a bang. You’ll hear it before you see it. A worn cable frays slowly, then lets go all at once, usually right as you’re trying to leave for work.
If you’ve got a Chamberlain door that’s suddenly lopsided, grinding, or refusing to move, this page tells you exactly what’s going on, what the fix costs, and whether you should touch it yourself (short answer: not the cable side of this repair).
Which Chamberlain Models This Applies To
We replace cables and drums on Chamberlain’s full residential lineup: the Classic series, Power Drive, Whisper Drive, and the HD and Professional line belt and chain drive doors that run on Chamberlain openers. The part compatibility gets specific fast. Chamberlain uses three common drum profiles depending on door height and spring type: 4-inch drums for 7-foot doors, 6-inch drums for 8-foot doors, and high-lift drums on doors that travel up near the ceiling. If you pair the wrong drum with your existing cable length, the door will not balance, period.
The cable itself is the easier part to match. Chamberlain factory cables are 1/8-inch aircraft-grade galvanized steel, typically 7/16-inch outer diameter with pre-swaged loops on one end. You can find your model number on a sticker inside the door panel or on the opener rail. We’re trained on Chamberlain doors specifically, along with LiftMaster and Genie, and Jaylen Ross keeps the common drum profiles and cable lengths stocked so you’re not waiting on a parts order. One honest note: Marlow Garage Door Repair is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Chamberlain. We use OEM-spec cables and drums that match factory dimensions, which matters more than the logo on the box.

Signs Your Chamberlain Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
- The door opens crooked or binds on one side. This is the number one cable symptom. One cable has stretched or slipped in the drum, so that side lags behind. Every time you run the door, the lag gets worse and the other cable takes the full weight.
- You see frayed or unraveling strands near the bottom bracket. Galvanized cable doesn’t fray from age alone; it frays from rubbing against the drum edge or the bracket. Those broken strands mean the cable has lost most of its rated load capacity and is running on borrowed time.
- A loud snap, then the door slams or hangs crooked. That snap is the cable letting go. The door loses tension on one side instantly, which can bend the track, crack a panel, or throw the door off its rollers. Do not try to run the opener after this happens.
- The drum is chewed up where the cable seats. Austin heat cycles harden the nylon in some aftermarket drums. Once the cable groove wall breaks or the cable slips out of the seat and wraps over itself, the drum is done. You can’t file that clean.
- The door works fine by hand but grinds or strains under the opener. A drum that’s out of round or a cable that’s binding creates drag the opener motor fights against. It’s a sign the cable and drum are loading unevenly, and the opener’s internal gears are paying for it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Chamberlain cable and drum replacement in Austin typically costs $130 to $250, installed. That includes new aircraft-grade cable matched to your door’s height and spring type, new drums sized to your track geometry, and full labor to install and retension the assembly. Doors with high-lift track or heavier custom panels land on the upper end of that range. You’ll see the exact number in writing before we start, and that number is the number you pay, no exceptions.
The reason the range exists is parts aren’t the whole story. A standard 7-foot door with standard-lift track is the straightforward case. A heavier insulated door on high-lift track takes longer to do right, and if a snapped cable also bent the bottom bracket or knocked a roller out of the track, that gets addressed at the same time. We quote the fixed price for the whole job before any work begins, and every replacement is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the cable or drum fails within a full year, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s the guarantee, written, not hinted at.

DIY or Call Us?
Let’s be straight about this: the torsion spring system on your Chamberlain door holds enough tension to seriously injure or kill a person. The cable and drum live inside that system. The cable is what transfers the spring’s force to the door. When it’s under load, that cable carries hundreds of pounds of stored energy. Releasing tension from a torsion spring without a proper winding bar is how people lose fingers, eyes, and worse. We do not recommend this as a DIY repair, and we say that as people who fix this for a living.
What you can safely do is check the basics: look at the cable for fraying, look at the drum for cracks, and pull the red release cord to run the door by hand and feel for binding. If you see a snapped cable or a damaged drum, call us at (361) 320-8872. We’ll give you a price over the phone and usually get someone out same day in most of Austin. The written quote is free, the work is warrantied for a year, and we do the tension work so you don’t have to think about it.
FAQs
In Austin, expect 5 to 8 years out of the factory cables and drums on a Chamberlain door that’s used twice a day. The Texas heat accelerates rust and nylon embrittlement, especially in west-facing garages that cook in the afternoon sun. If your door is 7 years or older and you’re already seeing frayed strands, replace both parts now rather than waiting for the snap.
Sometimes. If the drum is intact and the cable just frayed or snapped, we replace the cable alone. But when a cable has been running on a damaged drum, the drum has usually chewed the cable up and the cable has scored the drum, so both get replaced. We’ll tell you what actually needs replacing and quote you the fixed price before anything comes apart. Call (361) 320-8872 for an honest assessment.
The swap itself takes 30 to 60 minutes once we’re on site. Most jobs in Austin are done inside an hour.
Yes. We carry common drum profiles and cable lengths for Chamberlain, LiftMaster, and Genie doors on our service trucks, which means most replacements happen in one visit. For less common configurations we get the parts from our local Austin supplier the same day.
